As Demonstrated Live On

Miami Herald
BY BEA GARCIA
Not all great ideas for new technologies are born in the lab. Some
spring
from the very folks who need a bit of innovation.
That's exactly how HazMat Smart Strips came to be developed.
A $20 strip of vinyl and paper about the size of a baseball card, it
changes color when exposed to hazardous chemicals such as chlorine,
fluoride, various nerve agents, oxidizers, arsenic, sulfides and cyanide
in liquid or aerosol form.
The idea for the safety strips came from Mike Reimer, who runs Safety
Solutions, a Boynton Beach firm that consults and does training on how
to
respond to hazardous materials and chemical/biological weapons.
Reimer, a fire fighter by training, realized that rescue workers who
arrive at the scene of an emergency first could use an inexpensive
device
to check for hazardous materials.
''There's expensive equipment out there that can detect the presence of
hazardous materials, but not everyone can afford $3,000 detectors,'' he
says.
After a disaster response training exercise in West Virginia, Reimer was
brainstorming with the people from the Robert C. Byrd National
Technology
Transfer Center in Wheeling, W.Va. Reimer's initial design for the Smart
Strips was sketched out on a restaurant napkin.
The technology center, which is federally funded through the Department
of
Homeland Security, took that design on the napkin and built a prototype.
The center also assisted in finding suppliers for the materials needed
and
a manufacturer, Printech of Wheeling, W.Va., for the strips.
Since the Smart Strips were first introduced a year ago, there are now
some 500,000 in the field. They are used by the U.S. Coast Guard and
many
fire departments, including ones in Miami-Dade, Fort Lauderdale, Houston
and New York City. They're popping up at events where security is key
such as the Daytona 500 race car series, the U.S. Open and the G8 summit
meeting.
The company also developed a smaller version, according to the
military's
specifications, that sells for $5.99.
The U.S. State Department just ordered 3,000 Smart Strips that Reimer
expects will be used to protect U.S. embassies.

Latest News From The Field
"The Orange
County Fire Rescue Department responded to a catastrophic failure of a
12,000 gallon Fiberglass storage tank. The tank was approximately 2/3rds
full (8,000 gallons) of Sodium Hypochlorite, 20% solution. The chemical
company was working on the recovery of product when the Fire Department
arrived. First in HazMat units utilized the HazMat Smart-Strip and
approached the scene. Within seconds of being in the area of the spill,
the Smart-Strips showed readings for Chlorine.
The strips
were effective as a first indicator of
a release. The chemical company asked us about the strips and they were
provided with information regarding the strip and your website. In
addition, our Public Information Officer did an excellent job describing
the effectiveness on the HazMat Smart-Strip to the local media, that the
strips were featured on two of the news channels at noon, 5 and 6
o'clock news reports."
